Gerben Koolen
I was born and raised in Oosterhout, the Netherlands. For many years now, I’ve been living in Tilburg — a city where I truly enjoy living and working.
Music has always been a guiding force in my life, largely thanks to my father. He was a passionate music enthusiast and played the organ and accordion in his band. From a young age, he took me to see great bands, including Queen. Those experiences, together with his extensive record collection, formed the foundation of my love for music — and for rock in particular.
My first steps on stage were as a trumpet player in my father’s band. Soon I realized that this instrument wasn’t quite for me, which led me to switch to guitar and bass. It didn’t take long before I knew: this was it. The bass became my instrument.
The moment I discovered I could fill a room, a hall, or even a festival with my sound — my “thunder” — was decisive. The feeling of the air moving, the fabric of my pant legs fluttering, and the awareness that I am the driving force of the band — the engine, if you will — that is pure magic to me. Even after all these years, it remains the greatest feeling in the world.
I am a self-taught musician, and I soon realized that bass playing is not only where my talent lies, but — even more importantly — where my true passion is. I am a huge blues-rock fan, with a deep love for classic rock and Southern rock.
The very first album I ever bought was Made in Japan by Deep Purple… and I’ve never really recovered since. Bands like The Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd and AC/DC have shaped my musical journey ever since.
My biggest bass influences are Allen Woody, Kevin Scott, Oteil Burbridge and Dusty Hill — true masters of groove and drive.
Over the years, I have played in many bands, with a clear preference for performing live. I love looking people in the eye and creating something together on stage. Along the way, I have also been part of several recording projects. My most recent work is the album Miles to Go, recorded with Zak Perry & The Beautiful Things (Texas) at the legendary SugarHill Studios in Houston. I am extremely proud of the result.
A special milestone in my career has been the invitation to join the Julian Sas Band — a band I have been following and admiring for more than half my life. The power, energy and authenticity of this band have always inspired me, and I’m excited to add my own sound and passion to the mix. I realize these are big shoes to fill, as the Julian Sas Band has always had outstanding bass players, but I’m giving it my all. I can’t wait to hit the road together and hope to see and meet many of you out there.
